Class A fires are fires involving combustible materials such as wood, paper, and textiles. Water is able to cool the material's temperature to below the ignition point and therefore is effective in extinguishing a Class A fire. This is why pouring water onto it, by using a water hose or a bucket for example, is often the best way to put out a Class A fire. It should be noted that while gas and fabric are included as choices, they actually serve as fuel sources for fires rather than effective means of extinguishing them.
